In this article, we’ve distilled a list of 5 alternatives to lorazepam (also known as Ativan). If there is a message that we cannot reiterate enough on this site, it is this: Benzodiazepines are really, really bad for you. While it’s true that it will take a week or two before the process of dependency begins to occur, these are still very unsafe drugs to be taking in any quantity. However, they also happen to be very effective tranquilizers when it comes to anxiety and the symptoms associated with it.
That’s why we wanted to find natural remedies which could be just as effective as lorazepam (again – it’s usually marketed under the brand name Ativan) for short-term anxiolytic purposes. The majority of the fast-acting remedies we’re going to discuss here have been discussed at other points in time on Natural Anxiety Meds, but there are also a few new ones here that are definitely worth looking into. Without further ado, here’s the list (please also note that they are in no particular order):
1. Magnesium Supplements
Magnesium is one of those minerals that seems to play a role in just about everything. Without it, you’d have a lot of trouble. In fact, you probably wouldn’t be alive. Magnesium also plays a significant role in regulating mental health. There is scientific evidence pointing to a magnesium deficiency in some cases of acute anxiety – hence, we recommend a full blood work-up and taking a magnesium supplement if that happens to be the source of the problem. AnxiClear is an anti-anxiety supplement on the market that incorporates a variety of herbal and natural remedies into one product. These remedies include Valerian root extract, Chamomile, L-theanine, and Eleuthero root extract among many other active ingredients. For a more complete list of the ingredients contained within AnxiClear, please read our relevant write-up on the product. AnxiClear is offered in two versions: daytime (for general anxiety) and nighttime (for insomnia-induced anxiety).
3. Silexan Supplements
At Natural Anxiety Meds, we’re really excited about the next generation of natural (typically herbal) anxiety remedies. Among these new remedies is the German-developed lavender oil solution known as Silexan. In the United States and elsewhere outside of Germany, you can gain access to this powerful, new, and natural anxiolytic via the Lavela WS 1265 brand. We highly recommend it, and many of our readers have had success with lavender oil supplementation. It’s also backed by peer-reviewed scientific studies.
An important amino acid in the body that regulates a variety of essential physiological processes is 5-HTP. It’s one of the chemical building blocks of the neurotransmitter known as serotonin – the one that makes you feel happy. The idea behind taking a 5-HTP supplement is to give your body more of that building block in order to create more serotonin and thus boost happiness levels while decreasing anxiety levels. Here’s one of the better 5-HTP supplements on the market today:
Last but not least is the anti-anxiety supplement called Tranquilene. It contains a number of ingredients which have either been proven to contribute to low anxiety levels or may have a theoretical beneficial effect, including calcium, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B12, Magnesium, Passion Flower, GABA, L-Tryptophan, Ashwagandha, Bacopa Monnieri, L-Theanine, Green Tea Extract.
