Chamomile, a plant of the Asteraceae family, has long been known as an effective anxiety remedy. It is typically associated with chamomile tea, which is an herbal infused tea typically used for calming an upset stomach and as a sleep aid. In this article, we will examine the anxiolytic properties of chamomile, its mechanism of action, scientific studies which support its use as a natural anti anxiety remedy, and a few different safe and effective chamomile-based products.

How does chamomile help relieve anxiety?

Chamomile contains chemical compounds which bind to GABA receptors in the central nervous system. It has a number of other beneficial effects on the nervous and endocrine systems by helping to modulate various interactions. In other words, it performs a number of functions which contribute to an anxiolytic effect.

Some of the other chemical compounds and components found within chamomile have also been studied and determined to have other potential beneficial attributes, including anti-inflammatory, antigenotoxic, antihyperglycemic, and anticancer properties, as discovered in animal studies.

Scientific Studies

The main scientific study to determine whether or not chamomile has an anti anxiety effect was conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. This was their conclusion:

This is the first controlled clinical trial of chamomile extract for GAD. The results suggest that chamomile may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD. Future studies are needed to replicate these observations.

Side Effects

Chamomile may cause a reaction in allergic individuals. You should not take any chamomile products if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. As with all herbal supplements and treatment regimens, please consult with a doctor or other healthcare provider before incorporating them into your life.

Not to dig on the previous posetr, but since when does GNC know anything about aromatherapy? Even if they attempted to answer your question, I wouldn’t trust them in a million years to know anything about essential oils. They specialize in vitamins and chemical suppliments, not aromatherapy.Anyway.. how you use it is a personal preference (except ingest it, do not ingest it!). You can mix it with a carrier oil (you probably have olive or another pure plant oil in your kitchen) and apply it to your skin. You can heat it in an oil warmer (the kind with a tea light candle under a bowl of water), heat it on a radiator in a bowl of water, put it on a cotton ball next to your bed, put a drop or two on your pillowcase, or put a bunch of drops in a small spray bottle with water and spray it on your pillow (shake well before each use).. The key is that you want to smell it as you’re . The aroma should be subtle, not overpowering, and how you choose to use it is really up to you. You can even smell it directly out of the bottle before you lay down, but it will work better if you use a smaller amount over a longer period of time. The cotton ball next to the bed is really the easiest, in my opinion.. it works well, and if for some reason it’s too strong, or you decide you don’t like the smell, you can just throw the cotton ball away. If it works well, just add another drop or two the next night.
